High School Musical

It is widely known, however, that kids always drawn to smart characters in gripping stories about lasting elements of their lives. The popularity of Disney's High School Musical is, in may ways due to the fact that  it touches most of the elements that kids enjoy.

High School Musical tells the story of how Troy, the  handsome captain of the basketball team and Gabriella, a shy and intelligent transfer student defy convention and audition for their high school’s winter musical.

The story centers on the struggles between members of two different social groups, and many critics have referred to it as being a contemporary Romeo and Juliet. Historically,  adolescents have always struggled with the expectations placed on them by their peers; having to conform to the “Jock” stereotype when you secretly have a passion for musical theater, for example. High School Musical adeptly illustrates this.

High School Musical also celebrates the importance of hard work and achievement. All kids dream of being brave enough to excel whether on the sports field, in an academic competition, or on stage. In High School Musical, the characters with courage and talent work hard to do their best. One of the aspects of Disney’s story that resonates is the way in which it celebrates the wish to be true to oneself.

No other TV movie has generated such a long-lasting impact as High School Musical. In addition to the first movie, audiences enjoyed the spectacular sequel High School Musical 2, a DVD release  which sold 12 million copies in 6 days to become the fastest-ever selling TV movie  as well as a soundtrack that reached #1 (twice!), an incredibly popular concert tour, a touring stage musical,  an touring ice show, a best-selling novel, and an recent series of books detailing the stories from East High.

With a plot that deals with the common issues of following your dream and learning how to be true to yourself, kids have responded to High School Musical from the moment it was first broadcast in January 2006. The characters sing and dance their way into the hearts and minds of young audiences everywhere.
