The History of the Disney Movie Club

Some of Disney's greatest movies include:

Disney Movie Club

Whether you have children or you’ve grown up loving Disney movies yourself, this could be exactly the type of club you’d be interested in joining. With access to a wide number of films from Mickey’s version own studios, you can easily find all of your favorite animated and live-action family friendly entertainment without having to leave your home. If this sounds like a good idea to you then you may be interested in learning a little more about the club.

Background

The Disney Movie Club started in 2001. Since that time thousands of members have been able to easily and conveniently access the Disney Studios library of home entertainment, including some treasured gems and exclusives that are not long readily available to the public or seen on television.

Although music and movie clubs don’t have the best track records with consumers, Disney’s reputation and beloved library of titles has definitely made it a hit with many parents and even some non-parents who enjoy re-living their childhood with an old Disney favorite.

How Does It Work?

It works very much like many similar clubs. As a member, you agree to purchase a certain number of movies through the club during a specified time. In exchange for your agreement, you’ll usually receive free or discounted movies upfront that you can select from the catalog.  Each month a new movie from the catalog is featured that you purchase automatically unless you alert the club that you do not want the movie. You can also choose alternative movies to purchase during any month. All of the movies are shipped directly to you so you never have to head out to the store in search of the newest Disney classic on DVD.

While that’s the general overview, let’s get into more specifics about the club and its membership terms so you’ll have a good idea if this is going to be a great choice for your family.

Joining the Disney Movie Club

One of the reasons the club is so popular is the appeal of the initial offer. As of August 2008, the club was offering new members four Disney movies on DVD for only $1.99 each. Plus, the shipping costs were free for the introductory order. Additionally, new members could purchase an additional DVD at a 25% discount and a second DVD at 50% off club prices. That means new members can start their Disney DVD library with a half dozen films for under $33. That’s not much more than consumers are spending for the movies in stores.

Of course, there is a slight catch. Disney isn’t just going to basically give their movies away. When you join the club and choose your free/reduced priced DVDs, you are also agreeing to purchase five additional movies during the next two years at normal prices for the club. For a DVD, the Disney Movie Club currently charges $19.95.  Each shipment after the introductory one will also include shipping costs and a processing fee of $3.95 for the first movie in the order and $1 for each additional movie.

To make the Disney Movie Club more convenient, members receive up to 15 mailings a year that alert them to featured titles and to upcoming releases. The featured title is automatically shipped to a member and billed to his/her credit card unless they are notified within 10 days that you do not want that specific film. You can contact them easily enough through the provided return card, through the web site, or through a toll-free number.

After you’ve purchased the required number of movies, you’ll be automatically enrolled in the Disney Movie Club VIP program that will gain you access to special deals and offers that are only available to members of the club.

Benefits of Joining the Movie Club

Fans of Disney films will appreciate the convenience of being a member. They can choose the movies they want to purchase from home and can access a much larger catalog of titles than what would be available in a local store. Plus, parents can easily involve their children in the selection process by looking at the available choices together or parents can easily surprise their kids with Disney movies as treats or presents – something difficult to do when shopping with them at the store.

Another important benefit is that members have access to exclusive titles that simply aren’t normally available to consumers. These are known as Disney Exclusives and currently include titles such as The Monkey’s Uncle, Donald in Mathmagic Land, and the Legend of Lobo.

As a member, you won’t be limited to just those animated films either. You can also receive movies for grown-ups that have been released through Disney and their other studios. Movies, such as Sweet Home Alabama and The Sixth Sense, can provide parents with entertainment while their children can enjoy treasured classics, such as Cars or Pete’s Dragon.  Some of the biggest hits in entertainment are also available through the club, including High School Musical 2, Pirates of the Caribbean, Hannah Montana, the Chronicles of Narnia, and Enchanted.

A Few Facts to Know about Disney Movie Club

Although there are a number of benefits to being a member, there are a few small issues you should be aware of before signing up. For one, you can only use a credit card to place your order online or over the phone through the Web site. Debit cards are not accepted. However, you can pay by check if you print off your order form and mail it into the club.

Second, new Disney releases may not be immediately available through the Disney Movie Club. You’ll have to pay attention to announcement schedules and your regular mailings to find out when the film you want will be ready to buy.

Finally, even Movie Club members don’t have access to the films in the “Vault” so make sure to act fast when one of your favorites becomes available or you may not be able to purchase it for another several years.
